Koliva recipe for Memorial Service

2 cups wheatberrries
1 cup confectioner sugar
1/2 cup black raisins
1/2 cup yellow raisins
Rind from a small orange
2 tbs cinnamon
2 tbs sesame seeds
Some parsley sprigs
Pomegranate seeds
1/2 cup slivered almonds
1/2 cup of crushed walnuts
White Jordan Almonds
1 cup crushed graham crackers.

First boil wheatberrries for 1 1/2 hours.  Drain in a colander for a few hours.  In the morning  mix in 1/2  confectioner sugar, cinnamon, sesame seeds, walnuts, almonds, orange rinds, pomegranate, yellow and black raisins, and parsley.  Mix that all together.  Pour that into a pretty bowl.  Next layer the top with the crushed  graham crackers creating a barrier between the mixtures and the sugar.  Pat it flat.  Now place remaining confectioner sugar on top .  It should be a thick layer.  Finally take the White Jordan Almonds and write the first letter and last letter of the deceased name.  You may also make the sign of the cross with the almonds too.

Memorial service

Today my mother did a 26 year memorial  for my father, Gabriel David Karipidis .  I felt so honored and proud that my first born son Gabriel (Named after my father) served in the alter. I prepared the koliva myself.

Some Informative Greek website links from one Of my Teachers

Dear Greek School Parents,

I have been doing a lot of preparing for the fall, I have across many helpful websites to help your children in the Greek Language. As your children continue going through the Greek Program at the Holy Assumption of Port Jefferson, the grammar aspect of the language becomes a bit challenging. I have found some helpful websites so they may use in the future. It will be helpful in completing homework for the students. As a Greek Tutor, I come across the major issues with grammar. Grammar as we all know is not something that you learn over night, it takes plenty of years of practice. Hope you find these helpful, as I know I have. Thank You!!!

Yours Truly,
Despinis Sophia Panagos

Here are the links to the websites: Enjoy :)

Hope you find these sites both informative and insightful!
Thank You! Enjoy your summer!!

Summer Greek Program

Our students in our summer Greek Program are learning numbers.  We glued Popsicle sticks next to the correct number.  This way students can touch as they are counting the numbers. Thanks Kyria Markela!
